Rain, Rain Go Away!

With all of the rain over the last several weeks, we have been inundated with water and mold related issues.  Moisture control is the key to mold control.  Below are some tips for moisture and mold prevention:

1.  When water leaks or spills occur inside the home ACT QUICKLY!  If wet and/or damp areas are dried within 24-48 hours in most cases mold will not grow.

2.  Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.

3.  Make sure the ground slopes away from your foundation so that water does not collect around your home.

4.  Keep indoor humidity low--ideally humidity should be below 60 percent.

5.  If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes be sure to act quickly.  Dry surface and try and reduce the moisture/water sources.  Condensation is an indication of high humidity.

Fall/Winter

Leaves turn red or purple because of an increase in sugars that form anthocyanins. These anthocyanins are also found in purple produce--cabbage, beets and grapes.  The best autumn purple occurs with a combination of dry, sunny days and cool, dry nights.

    Shrubs

Planting shrubs in the fall gives them a chance to settle in before winter arrives and before the heat of the upcoming summer.  Shrubs are a great way to beautify landscapes and improve areas that could be problematic.  They help prevent slope erosion, anchor beds of annuals and perennials.

When selecting shrubs there are a few things to consider:

    1.  Type of soil you have.
    2.  Sun exposure.
    3.  Room needed to grow.

Some other great reasons to pick shrubs are the combination of blooms, leaves, size/shape and texture are endless.  Shrubs need little maintenance.  Weeds tend to be less common in shrub beds due to the plant blocking sun weeds from germinating.  The best reason is there is a shrub that will thrive in almost any area of your yard.
